The Spring game is in the books and we are a little over 4 months out from another exciting football season. Today social media was dominated with several stories involving the Louisville football program.

Cardinal Nation found out that Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium will get new field turf to start the new football season and that means that the field will also be getting a design makeover. U of L football tweeted out the following image about what the new PJCS field will look like this fall. And below you can see a picture of them already getting to work replacing the old turf. I really like the new design and especially the Cardinal head at the 50 yard line and the black end zone designs.

Along with the news about the new turf design being installed at the stadium, we also found out some very good news about next years football schedule. The Chicago Tribune reported that the Cards and Irish would meet in 2014, although we don’t know if it will be in Louisville or South Bend. This is very promising news and will be a great thing to look forward to when we are watching some of the games on the not so pleasing schedule this year. Notre Dame will be joining the ACC on July 1st. And their membership means all sports but football and hockey, but they will play 5 ACC schools in football annually. Louisville will join the ACC in the 2014 season for all sports. Along with the Irish on the schedule the rest of the Cardinals’ 2014 slate will include Kentucky, Florida State, Georgia Tech, NC State, Wake Forest and probably Virginia Tech. It’s a shame we don’t have this schedule this season but like I mentioned above it does give us something to look forward to.

– Top Recruiting targets for 2014

 photo Untitled-112-8-1jj_zpsc8d66446.jpg

Another basketball season is in the books and with just a week of celebrating under their belts the coaching staff will go back to work this week as they start hitting the recruiting trail again. This time they will be heading out with another weapon in their recruiting pitch. With already a great program to sell the staff can now boast back-to-back final fours and a National Championship. With the 2013 class signed and starting workouts in the summer the focus now shifts to the 2014 class. Our staff has already made great strides with several guys in this class and it would surprise me if they didn’t have this class put away as fast as they did the 13 class. So who are the top guys that the Louisville staff is focused on?

Already Signed:

Quentin Snider (BALLARD H.S. – LOUISVILLE, KY)
Untitled-41-1-1-2

Rick Pitino got an early start last August in the Class of 2014 when Snider picked the hometown Cardinals and this could be just the beginning for the Cardinals landing local talent. Snider’s travelling team is the Louisville Magic They are coached by former Card Ellis Myles who was coach Pitino’s outstanding project. Snider’s early commitment, from a team with other highly regarded developing prospects is good for the Cardinals. The Magic have a great bunch of young talent on their roster and Snider, while being a contributor isn’t the best player on the team. That honor belongs to potential Top 25 prospect DeAngelo Russell. When the time comes the line for Russell’s services will be deep and it’s likely that the Snider commit and Magic connections will help put Louisville right in the middle of that race.
Snider exhibit signs of being a high-level point guard prospect. He’s quick and makes good decisions on the break, and does show some shooting range.

Shaqquan Aaron (RAINIER BEACH H.S. – SEATTLE, WA)
Untitled-41-1-1-2

Aaron a 6-foot-5 point guard that can handle the ball and can shot light outs. People are already comparing him to a young Kevin Durant with his size and length and his ability to shot and drive to the hole. Aaron has all the physical gifts to be a high-level player. If he is willing to work hard on developing his game at both ends of the floor and stay humble as he grows as a player, his potential is immense.

Top Targets:

DeAngelo Russell (MONTVERDE ACADEMY – LOUISVILLE, KY)
Untitled-41-1-1-2

There is no doubt in my mind that Russell is the biggest target for Pitino and staff for the 2014 class. As mentioned above Russell is a local guy who plays on the AAU squad Louisville Magic. He is teammates with Snider and I believe this will go a long way in helping the staff get him in a Louisville uniform. He is one of the elite wings in the 2014 class. The 6-3 combo guard has made a big name for himself and he is on the radar of many schools. Some have mentioned that he may be the best prospect the city of Louisville has seen since Rajon Rondo. He is a solid overall athlete, has exceptional vision, a strong basketball IQ and is an impressive passer. He also possesses a very quick release and deep range on his jump shot. Russell had an unofficial visit with Snider to the campus but nothing official. Russell is expected to cut his list at the end of summer and I think he will be receiving several visits from Coach Pitino before then.

Trey Lyles (ARSENAL TECHNICAL H.S. – INDIANAPOLIS, IND)
 photo Untitled-41-1-1-2-9-1_zps67d9223b.jpg

Lyles is another top-level priority for Coach Pitino and his staff. So much so that Rick himself has taken on the role as Lyle’s primary recruiter and just moments after winning his second national title he whipped out his cell phone and sent a text to Trey in hopes of giving the Cards some recruiting momentum for the five-star prospect. Trey and his father have mentioned that they are in no hurry to make a decision and will visit several schools in the next several months. He had a terrific junior season and Lyles has all the ingredients for stardom. He is skilled and productive for a young player. He has to be considered amongst the top 5 players in the 2014 class nationally right now. Lyles is good now but according to most recruiting sites has an even better upside.

Jalen Lindsey (CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN ACADEMY – FRANKLIN, TENN.)
 photo Untitled-41-1-1-2-977777_zps72a3188b.jpg

Jalen like D’Angelo and Trey is another recruit that seems to be of top priority to the Louisville coaching staff and Coach Pitino. Lindsey has been compared to a former Pitino player Ron Mercer. According to those close to Lindsey he is on that track, but he’s just a sliver behind. He continues to impress scouts with his work ethic and his willingness to be great, not just good. He’s always played in the post, so now he’s working diligently on his ball handling and getting comfortable on the perimeter. He’s learning to guard on the perimeter, getting through ball screens and doing the types of things to take his game to the next level. Jalen has great form on his outside shot, but reportedly has to work on his consistency. His biggest area to work on going forward is adding muscle/weight, which many elite prospects have to do at this stage of their careers. Scouts also note that he needs to work on his ball handling, but these “weaknesses” are all relative since his talent level is so high.

Isaiah Whitehead (LINCOLN H.S. – BROOKLYN, N.Y.)
 photo Untitled-41-1-1-2-9888_zpse1239cc4.jpg

Perhaps coach Pitino will go back through his New York pipeline to get the inside track on this prize recruit in 2014. Whitehead plays for the same high school that Sebastian Telfair played. Cardinal fans surely remember him. Coach Pitino extended an offer to Isaiah back in March and the coaching staff went to watch him play. Whitehead can stroke it from long range, but he does most of his damage by slashing to the hoop. He is a tough and competitive scoring guard with great size that can help at the point. He has a terrific mid range game and can make plays for himself or others with the ball in his hands. He must continue to build his game but his upside is tremendous. With his ability to put it on the floor and shoot the ball, it will allow him to fit at multiple schools. He isn’t particularly looking for a program that is locked into one specific style of playing.

JaQuan Lyle (BOSSE H.S. – EVANSVILLE, IN)
Untitled-41-1-1-2

He is a steady and consistent combo guard who is seeing his stock rise everyday. Although he does not display blinding speed and quickness, he has good size for his position, and is able to play both guard spots in the backcourt. Lyle creates opportunities for himself and teammates by getting into the lane, and he has good vision to dump it off or kick it out. His smooth demeanor on the court is also an asset. At the NBPA Top 100 camp, Lyle roomed with Quentin Snider and Anton Gill. They were both on record saying they were trying to help get him in a Louisville uniform.
Lyle had a visit to the Louisville campus the first weekend in September.

Cliff Alexander (CHICAGO CURIE H.S. – CHICAGO, IL)
Untitled-41-1-1-2

His hands and defensive skills are elite. Alexander is a strong and physical post that can rebound, block shots and finish. He plays hard and competes on both ends. He must work to stay in shape and build his offensive scoring package but this big man has tremendous upside. This kid has previously mentioned Michigan St as his leader and said that UK was his dream school at the NBPA Top 100 camp. But we all know that with recruiting it’s usually fly by the seat of your pants. He still seems to be a top target for Louisville and things are always changing.

Theo Pinson (WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN ACADEMY – GREENSBORO, NC)
Untitled-41-1-1-2

Theo is one of the elite Small Forwards in the country and he was one of 24 players named to the USA Basketball men’s developmental national team in March. And before heading to training camp, he was named the No. 1 prospect in his class by ESPN. Recruiting websites tout Pinson’s length and confidence, his unselfish passing and scoring proficiency, his excellent mid-range shot and ability to both power and finesse his way to the rim.
“His upside is tremendous,” Theo’s AAU coach, Tony Edwards, told basketball-recruiting reporter Adam Zagoria in July at the Peach Jam, a major AAU tournament in Georgia. “I mean, he has a lot of improving to do in all areas. His court awareness, defensively, his body, his shot, communicating, just a lot of detail stuff. … Right now he’s just playing off all athleticism, just all natural instincts.”
This guy has the Louisville staff’s full attention heading into the 2014 rush, and is a top target.

Kevin Looney (MILWAUKEE HAMILTON H.S. – MILWAUKEE, WI)
Untitled-41-1-1-2

Looney exploded onto the national stage last summer with a flurry of big time performances and looks to add to that going into this summer. The game looks easy for him at times. He is always in the right spot and uses his length, instincts, and skill to completely dominate almost every time he’s on the floor. Kevon is an excellent prospect at his position and perhaps all of this is the reason he is high on the Louisville wish list for 2014.

These are my projected top targets for the 2014 class. I have come up with this list through research and by asking some of the recruiting guru’s across the nation. This list will probably change over time. There are other names that have come up recently and have been added to my recruiting page. You can check them out as well as read more about the guys I listed above. You can also check out some of their highlight videos on the recruiting page.

13 For 13

Today coach Strong met with the media to talk about his team as they get ready to take the field tomorrow at 1:00PM in Papa Johns Cardinal stadium for the annual Spring Game. He mentioned that most people think the number 13 was an unlucky number but that it could be a very lucky number for his football team this year. Strong was very enthusiastic talking about his guys and the opportunities they have this year. Coach Strong says that leadership, consistency and execution will be the keys to reaching their goals this season. Louisville’s priorities this spring have been refining conference offensive player of the year and potential Heisman Trophy candidate Teddy Bridgewater, solving the backfield riddle, and finding a new left tackle and center to replace All-Big East performers Alex Kupper and Mario Benavides. This looks to be another great football season and one that could take this program to another level from where it went last season. Get out and support the football team tomorrow as they take the field for the last time this spring.

CS: “The 1st year in the program was more about them learning who we were as coaches. Now they know and they understand it’s about executing.”
CS: “Consistency. Will we show up to play? No matter who we’re playing, will we show up to play? It’s all about being consistent.”
CS: “The key for us this year will be the leadership… where is the leadership going to come from? You have the guys, but who will lead?”

SPRING DEPTH CHART OFFENSE:
 photo IMG_13433333_zpsf353b777.jpg

Here are some of the quotes about this group today:

CS: “It’s been pleasant to see the return of Dominique Brown. He’s been running the ball well this spring.”
CS: “The wide receiver position is probably the strength of our football team.”
CS: “Teddy just keeps better and better and better.”
CS: “To run the football, we know the game has to be won up front. Last Mario and Kupper were the anchors. We have to find that anchor.”
CS: “We’re going to let Teddy go & play, but we also want to let the 2 young guys get experience in front of a crowd. We must find a backup.”
CS: “Teddy doesn’t want to let people down and he doesn’t want all of the attention. He wants to win first and foremost.”
CS: “I like the way Teddy throws the football and he doesn’t turn the football over. You can count on him to play well.”
CS: “You have to pound people with the running game. You saw it in the Sugar Bowl as it worked to get more yards in the 2nd half.”

SPRING DEPTH CHART DEFENSE:
 photo IMG_134333333_zps8cea85c1.jpg

Here are some of the quotes about this group today:

CS: “On defense, we only lose one starter. We’ve had some injuries but we have experience.”
CS: “I dont know if there’s a player on the team that goes harder than Lorenzo Mauldin does.”
CS: “We expect a lot out of Preston Brown. We expect him to be our leader on defense.”
CS: “We probably have the two best safeties in the conference in Hakeem Smith and Calvin Pryor.”
CS: “Our players have to understand it’s all about competing. Our def goes against best QB in the country. That should make everyone better.”

SPRING DEPTH CHART SPECIAL TEAMS:
 photo IMG_1343444444_zps85671ad2.jpg

Coach Strong also talked about his team being able to stay humble this season a midst their lofty expectations. And he even mentioned that he could show them the video of the Syracuse game from last year. Coach closed out today talking about the Basketball team and how impressed he was with the fan support. Lets not let coach down tomorrow and get to those seats early and cheer on these guys. The basketball teams will also be honored at half time tomorrow and fans will get a chance to take a picture with the Championship trophy. Oh yea and 1$ beers.

CS: “When you have teamwork and you have sacrifice, you’re going to get your championship. That’s what the MBB team had this season.”
CS: “What we can’t do is become our own worst enemy. You can’t talk too much about winning Sugar Bowl.”
CS: “What I can do is always bring back Syracuse game film from last year and I did that last week. That keeps guys humble.”

A CHAMPIONSHIP IN PHOTOS

This weekend was great for Cardinal fans and Monday night was the greatest moment of my life as a Cardinal fan. Most of us got to finally see a championship for the first time in our adult lives and it is a moment that I will cherish forever. I was there on Monday night and it was awesome to witness the pageantry and glory of a National Championship game. I took some photos before and after the game to try and capture what I could of this magical and memorable night.

Last night was the greatest sports moment of my life and I know I share that sentiment with the Card Nation. That was one of the best national title games of its 75 year history. It had everything the pageantry, the stars, two great teams, two incredible fan bases and one shining moment. And our Louisville Cardinals seized the day as they beat the Michigan Wolverines 82-76 in an instant classic. The win gave our Cardinals their 3rd National Title and puts them in an elite group with only 8 other programs reaching that mark. They closed out this magical season on a 16 game win streak.

This season has been like a fairy tale in many ways and one that could be a future 30 for 30 feature on ESPN. In a college basketball culture with kids coming to school for one year to boost their NBA draft stock Louisville has established a team first approach. Coach Pitino and his staff have done a great job of recruiting the guys that fit into this team first system. Louisville really has become the model program for doing it the right way and in a more traditional way. The emotional journey to this championship story started with that 5 overtime loss to Notre Dame. After that loss Coach Pitino challenged this team to bond together and to win the rest of the way. And they answered his challenge by winning out the regular season and winning the final Big East tournament championship. That alone will be something that will never be forgotten but this team wasn’t done yet. They would parlay the great season into the number one overall seed in the NCAA tournament. They had a great team run through the first round in Lexington and then in Indy Cardinal Nation and the rest of the world would understand what it means to be bonded together as a team. That’s when we really started to understand how special this group really was. The Cards rode that wave of emotion of losing one of their brothers into the Final Four. Here they would run into two great teams who also seemed to be playing for something greater than themselves. And this is where this fairy tale story had its greatest moments. A walk on who had only played sparingly and had scored 16 points on the season comes into the national semi-finals and hits two of the biggest three point shots you’ll ever see to give the Cards a spark to overcome a 12 point deficit. Then in the national title game a guy that had been averaging around 6 points a game becomes the first player to come off the bench to win the tourney’s most outstanding player. In the end of this fairy tale season the Cards turned out to be the most dominate team in the country.
The Cardinals were locked-in on defense, momentously hot on offense and too emotionally charged to let this one get away from them. They had the experience of last season, a Hall of Fame head coach, the emotional leader Ware and the individual playmakers Peyton, Russ, Gorgui, Wayne, Chane, Hancock, Montrezl, Stephan and Tim. This was a great season and a great story and these Cardinals seized the day.

I know I will never forget this group and the experiences they have awarded me from being a Cardinal fan. I have written so much about these guys that I feel like I know each of them personally. And I’m very grateful to be somewhat connected to them through those words. I’m going to seize this moment and this day for the rest of my life. My Louisville Cardinals are National Champions. Oh and I’m glad I can finally sleep and shave.

March Madness: The Title Game Beak Breakdown Michigan

Our Cards have won 15 straight games and have made it to the end of the road on their final four journey. They will face a young but very talented Michigan team to cut down the nets Monday night. This is the first title game for the Cardinals in 27 years. Louisville played Michigan in 1977 and won 88-85 and then played again in 1978 winning that game 86-84. Rick Pitino is 0-1 all-time against Michigan playing them in the 1993 Final Four against the Fab 5 and lost 81-78.

There are a few things you can confidently predict about a team coached by John Beilein. They will play slow. They will shoot lots of threes. They will take good care of the ball. Offensive rebounds and free throws will not be weapons. Beilein did a great job with under-the-radar recruits, and we now know what happens when he lands the big dogs. Michigan is one of the youngest teams in the field of 68. Beilein’s eight-man rotation consists of four highly touted freshmen, two sophomores and two juniors. This young group are an exceptional team on the offensive end of the floor but that hasn’t caught up to their defense. They do have a tendency to act their age at times and will often settle for jump shots, not get to the free-throw line and do a poor job of rebounding the ball. With such a wide variance between offensive and defensive efficiency most predicted the Wolverines to be upset in the previous rounds of the NCAA tourney. They have stepped up and done a good job of overcoming their deficiencies to make the national title game. On offense the Wolverines play a hybrid-Princeton offense that utilizes three or four guards at once, relies heavily on the 3-point shot and creating mismatches by setting ball screens. On defense they want to keep opponents off-balance by switching things up. Primarily a man-to-man defensive team, they will mix in some 2-3 zone and 1-3-1 zone at times the latter of which the Wolverines trap out of, causing serious headaches to opposing squads.

Michigan season averages on defense:
Turnovers Forced- 12.1, Blocks- 2.8, Steals- 6.2

Projected Starters:

F Glenn Robinson III FR: Rated a five-star recruit and the No. 18 player in the nation, GRIII is an athletic wing whose best traits are attacking the basket on offense and the glass on defense. He adds versatility to Beilein’s lineup, and he can slide over to the power forward spot when the Wolverines want to get quicker and more up-tempo. He has 64 points and 31 rebounds in the NCAA tourney.

F Mitch McGary FR: He may be the best recruit in Beilein’s tenure at Michigan. ESPN rated him a four-star prospect, the No. 5 power forward and the No. 27 player in the class of 2012. He’s a do-whatever-it-takes player who isn’t afraid to mix it up or dive after a loose ball. Defensively, he can use his wide-bodied frame to box out and keep opponents from the lane while being an effective shot-alterer. His offensive strengths now are as a left-handed, back-to-the-bucket scorer. He has 80 points and 58 rebounds in the NCAA tourney.

G Tim Hardaway Jr. JR: He is a strong rebounder from the guard spot and possesses a similar ability as Burke in slashing to the basket, albeit with not as quick a first step or as good of ball-handling skills. He loves to jack up the 3 ball and sometimes takes plays off on defense. He has 67 points and 21 rebounds.

G Trey Burke SOPH: With good height and quickness, Burke can penetrate the lane off the bounce and look to either score or distribute the ball. He’s equally adept at spotting up for a 3-pointer, and he can pull up for midrange jumpers while attacking the basket in the half-court or on the break. He has 69 points, 35 assist and 17 rebounds.

G Nik Stauskas FR: The lengthy Canadian is a top-100 recruit Beilein called “the ultimate gym rat” who plays the game with passion and energy. He’s a big two guard and an outstanding shooter with range, but is also one of those shooters who has the ability to play off the bounce. He really sees the floor as well. He has 49 in the NCAA tourney and went 6-6 from the 3 point line against Florida in the regional final.

Bench Players:

F Jordan Morgan JR: Defensively, he’s more adept at keeping opposing bigs from moving toward the basket than he is at altering their shots. Morgan continued to develop around the rim as a scorer, attacking the bucket for dunks or layups. He is not very affective in the short to midrange game. He has 5 points and 8 rebounds in the NCAA tourney.

F Jon Horford SOPH: He is former Florida player Al Horford’s brother. Like his brother Al when he played for Florida, Jon Horford oozes potential between his lean, long frame and ability to get off the floor quickly. It translates to shot blocking, rebounding and pass deflections. He has 12 points and 11 rebounds in the NCAA tourney.

G Spike Albrecht FR: He has a very high basketball IQ and is a true point guard whose best attributes are guiding an offense and setting up his teammates. He has 19 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assist in the NCAA tourney.

G Caris LeVert FR: In Levert, the Wolverines get a lithe but versatile player who can play any of the three guard spots. He had his most productive game of the NCAA tourney against Syracuse where he scored 8 points, had 4 rebounds and 2 assist.

The national championship game is now set and it will feature the nations best offense versus the nations best defense according to Kenpom. But I feel like this game is more about Louisville’s multidimensional attack against a Michigan team that relies heavily on one aspect of their game to be successful. And I think if the Cards can get them to act their age whether that means; beating up the Wolverines’ four-guard lineup on the backboards, making Robinson III disappear, or getting one of the young Michigan stars into foul trouble they will be cutting down the nets.

For whatever reason four of the Cards most important players took the night off in the game against Wichita State. I think they were just a victim of those high emotions and with that survive and advance game out of the way these guys will be on a mission Monday night. I think this is a very good Michigan team but the 2012-13 Louisville Cardinals are the team of destiny and they are not going to be denied. I’ve been waiting 27 years to watch my favorite team climb those ladders and will finally get to see it on Monday night. Cards are gonna get it done.

The Beak Prediction:
Louisville 80 Michigan 73

HAN-SHOCKED!

Uploaded from the Photobucket <br /><br /><br /><br /><br /> iPhone App

 photo LUKE1_zps71bfbf2a.jpg

Winning the College Basketball National Title is the hardest trophy to win in all of sports. Tonight just further proved that point as the 9th seeded Wichita State Shockers took our #1 overall seed Louisville Cardinals to the very end before the Cards finally prevailed 72-68. The Cards have now won 15 straight games and will finally get a chance to play for a national championship for the first time in 27 years. I’m 40 years old and the last time I seen a Louisville team in the title game I was laying in my parents living room floor watching that 86 group on an old Zenith console. Remember those? This time I’ll see it live in Atlanta and I can’t wait.

Up until tonight Louisville had navigated its rocky road with ease, first handling North Carolina A & T, then destroying Colorado State, followed by a comfortable eight-point win over Oregon and, lastly, a punishing second-half spurt to pull away from Duke in an Elite Eight clash. Aside from Duke hanging tough through the first 20 minutes our Cards hadn’t had much of a challenge. But tonight they got all they wanted from the Shockers and with 13 minutes left were down by 12 points. But just like they had done through this entire tourney and season they turned up the defense and were able to pull it out. Through this tourney the Cardinals had forced turnovers on 27.5 percent of opponents’ possessions. Tonight the Shockers took very good care of the ball up until about 13 minutes left in the game. That’s when Louisville erased a 12-point deficit and outscored Wichita State by 16 points. The Cardinals were able to speed up Wichita State during this stretch forcing them into seven turnovers in the final seven minutes after they’d gone more than 26 minutes without one. The Cards had 26 deflections Saturday, its fewest in the 2013 Men’s Basketball Championship. The Cardinals entered the Final Four averaging 45.0 deflections per game in the tournament. Louisville had 17 of its 26 deflections in the second half.

The MVP of the night was the bearded wonder Luke Hancock. If you have been reading my stuff all season then you know that I had pegged Hancock as one of my x-factors for a national title run. Tonight Luke stepped up his game and truly was the x-factor coming off the bench scoring 20 points including 14 in the second half, to help the Cards rally from a dozen-point deficit. He also had 4 rebounds, 2 assist and 2 steals in his standout performance. He had averaged 6.8 points over his previous four NCAA tournament games. The Cardinals were more efficient tonight with Hancock on the court, averaging 1.34 points per possession in the 31 minutes he played. He has become a very important part of this Cardinal machine and we will need him to continue to play like this on Monday night.

It was great to see Chane have a good game tonight. He had really been in a slump during the NCAA tournament but tonight he broke out of that slup just in time and this team needed it in the worst way tonight. He was very close to a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds and was key in the Cardinals come back. I think he is the kind of guy that loves the big spotlight and this is the second time that he has stepped up in the tournament when the Cards chances were on the line. He came up big in that regional final game last year. Ware on Behanan: “Bout time he played.” Behanan response: “He’s probably right.”

Tonight Russ, Peyton, Gorgui and Wayne had their worst games of the season. And yes Russ led the team in scoring with 21 points but he was 5 of 12 from the free throw line and that’s unheard of from him. Gorgui and Wayne were scoreless tonight and Peyton had 7 points but was still very ineffective on the offensive end of the floor. It was the bench that came through tonight and the Cards would have been on a flight home right now if it had not been for those guys stepping up. The above mentioned Luke Hancock along with Montrezl, Stephan and Tim scored 34 of the Cardinals final 72 points and accounted for 13 of the teams 32 rebounds.

Got to give kudos to Tim Henderson for making me look like I know what I’m talking about. In my post game last week I mentioned how I had full confidence that this kid could step in and get the job done in Kevin’s absence. Henderson said after the game: “When Kevin went down, he told me, ‘I believe in you. You can step up. I’ve seen you in practice. I’ve seen you do this.” Tonight he hit two monster 3 point shots that sparked the Louisville comeback. Up until those two shots he had 16 points this season. I was really impressed watching Tim play against the starting unit in the Red & White games back in November. You could tell that he was a hard working kid and that he is the type of guy that doesn’t back down from a challenge. And just like Rick Pitino mentioned tonight in his press conference: “Tim goes against Russ everyday in practice.” I’m glad this kid got his chance to step up on this the biggest stage in college sports. Guys like Tim work their butts off all year just like the rest of these guys do and they very often get a chance to play let alone in a huge game like tonight. I’m sure he will be telling his grand kids about those 2 big three point shots some day.

Coach Pitino: “The players said they weren’t surprised about him making those back to back threes. They’re being very kind. I was shocked.”

Well Cardinal fans we have reached the final stop on this final four journey. Without a doubt our Cardinals are the best team in the country and they must go out on Monday night and prove it one last time. I think tonight was just the kind of game they needed and in my opinion teams need games like this in tournament if they are going to become National Champions. It’s these survive and advance moments that define a title run. The Michigan Wolverines are the only thing standing in the way of one of the greatest moments in Louisville’s basketball history. NO SLEEP TIL ATLANTA BABY!

Now the college Basketball Hall of Fame does, and many think its about time. Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said Thursday that Pitino’s induction was long overdue. “Should’ve been in last year, but I don’t see any way in the world that he wouldn’t be in the Hall of Fame,” Boeheim said. “He’s got better credentials than probably 80% of the coaches in there.” I know that many of us have always considered Coach Pitino a Hall of Famer but it is great to see it finally become official.

“Pitino went back to the NBA in 1997, but returned to college—and his adopted home state—on March 21, 2001 to coach the University of Louisville following the retirement of Hall of Fame coach Denny Crum. In the 2005 season, Pitino led Louisville to their first Final Four in 19 years, and became the first men’s coach in NCAA history to lead three different schools to the Final Four. Immediately following their Final Four run, several players graduated or entered the 2005 NBA Draft. The inexperience caused the Cardinals to limp into the Big East Tournament seeded 12th, and miss the NCAA tournament. They made the semifinals of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), where they were defeated by eventual champions University of South Carolina. The 2007 Cardinal team was primarily the same team, with added freshmen. Picked to finish towards the bottom of the Big East Conference again, Pitino led them to a second-place finish, 12–4 (tied with the University of Pittsburgh, who had been beaten by the Cardinals during the regular season) in the conference standings and a first round bye in the conference tournament. Pitino implemented a 2–2–1 and 2–3 zone defense midway through the season. The 2007 team’s season ended when the Cardinals lost to Texas A&M in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The 2008 Cardinals finished second in the Big East and ranked 13th in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. Louisville was the third seed in the 2008 NCAA tournament’s East region. They defeated Boise State, Oklahoma and Tennessee to advance to the Elite Eight, where they were defeated by North Carolina. Louisville was the top seed overall in the 2009 NCAA tournament and was planted as the first seed in the Midwest region. They defeated Morehead State, Siena and Arizona to advance to the Elite Eight, where they were defeated by Michigan State. In 2010 the Cardinals suffered a disappointing 15-point loss to their first round opponent, the California Golden Bears. In 2011, Louisville was upset by 13th-seeded Morehead State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
In 2012, Pitino coached the Cardinals to the Big East tournament championship and a berth as a 4 seed in the West region of the NCAA tournament. The Cardinals defeated Davidson, New Mexico, and top seed Michigan State to advance to the regional final against Florida and his former player and friend Billy Donovan. The Cardinals would go on to win that game, but lost to arch-rivals and eventual national champions Kentucky in the 2012 Final Four.”- Wiki

This year Coach Pitino is in perhaps his most promising season at the helm of our Louisville Cardinals. He has led them to a 33-5 record, tied for the Big East regular season crown, won the Big East Tourney title and currently has them riding a 14 game win streak heading into their 10th Final Four. It is the Cardinals 3rd Final Four under Coach Pitino and he has a 308–111 (.734) record in 12 seasons as the Louisville head coach. This years team is the odds on favorite to win a National Title and it would be icing on the cake of a remarkable career for coach Pitino.

Coach Pitino, who won the 1996 NCAA title with Kentucky, is making his seventh Final Four appearance this weekend with Louisville. Also having taken Providence to the Final Four, Pitino’s the only coach to make college basketball’s final weekend with three different schools. His career record as a college coach is 662-239. He’s also spent time in the NBA.

An official announcement will be made Monday, The Hall of Fame in February had named 12 finalists for 2013. Finalists needed votes from 18 of 24 members of the Honors Committee to be selected.

Enshrinement ceremonies are Sept. 8 in Springfield, Mass.

The 2013 finalists:

Players: Maurice Cheeks, Tim Hardaway, Spencer Haywood, Bernard King, Gary Payton, Mitch Richmond and women’s player Dawn Staley.

Coaches: Rick Pitino, Tom Heinsohn, Guy Lewis, Jerry Tarkanian and women’s coach Sylvia Hatchell.

CHANE BEHANAN WINS PEPSI MAX DUNK OF THE YEAR

At 6-6 250 when Chane Behanan goes up to dunk the ball he tries to rip the rim off. And the sight of this young man elevating as he attempts to rip a rim off its foundation is stunning. The size-to-glide ratio is uneven. The backboard’s survival is surprising. It’s an assault that causes a very loud clang as the cylinder is violently snatched before it ricochets back into place. You can hear it echo through the arena.

One of these monster dunks has been named Pepsi MAX Dunk of the Year. It was a dunk that I called “BoomChaneKalaka” and it came during the Cards beat down of DePaul this season. Behanan is the second Cardinal to win this award in the last three years as Kyle Kuric won the award in 2011 for his monster dunk against Notre Dame.

Below is the video of the Behanan dunk:

March Madness: Final Four Beak Breakdown Wichita State

It has been a whirlwind for the last couple of days around the Louisville basketball program. The passion, purpose and sense of brotherhood of this team has now been discovered by a national audience. Saturday it will be time to refocus and get back down to business as the Cards must win two more games to be the National Champion. The Cards will face another team that has played very inspired basketball this season when they open up their 10th Final Four against the Wichita State Shockers of the Missouri Valley conference.

Some are calling the Shockers the Cinderella of this years NCAA Tournament but I don’t think the glass slipper fits in this case and I don’t think this team wants it to. Wichita State has won 86 games the last three seasons with players who ran faster and jumped higher than most of their opponents. Perhaps overlooked was the fact those players used those tools in the most unselfish and efficient way possible. And their head coach Gregg Marshall has had only one losing season in his last 14 years. The Shockers are no strangers to success as they had their fourth straight 20-win season this year including winning their first 18 straight. This is not the most talented team, but it is one of the hardest-working teams. The Shockers pass the ball, rarely take bad shots and take pride in winning the rebounding battle. They rank in the top 20 for both offensive and defensive rebounding percentage. This is a deep team that will play 8 to 10 guys a game. They have 3 players that score in double figures and everyone that sees time usually ends up in the scoring column. They have a team mindset when it comes to their offense. On defense they will play man-to-man and use 2-2-1 full-court pressure that forces teams to play faster than they’d like. They have the same defensive philosophy that the Cards have and hope to wear teams down with their deep bench and constant pressure.

Projected Starters:

C Ehimen Orukpe SR: . Orukpe, a 7-footer from Nigeria, is not a natural scorer or ball handler. But he does help the team with his defense in the Kane and his shot blocking ability and rebounding. He has scored 7 points and has 16 rebounds in the NCAA tourney.

F Carl Hall SR: He is another strong player in the lane and will score most of his points on put backs and post moves. This is a guy who waited for his time and has taken advantage of it. He has scored 43 points and has 12 blocked shots in the NCAA tourney.

G Tekele Cotton SOPH: He is strong enough to guard all of the perimeter shooters. Is a very tough athletic guard that can push the break and get to the rim. He also rebounds well. He has scored 30 points and has 15 rebounds in the NCAA tourney.

G Demetric Williams SR: He is WSU’s top on-the-ball defender. He has earned more playing time when he harnessed his quickness and cut down his turnovers. He has 6 points and 3 assist in the NCAA tourney.

G Malcolm Armstead SR: The lefty point Armstead, a 6-foot Oregon transfer, brings toughness, double-figure scoring and experience to the table for the Shockers. He has scored 62 points and 21 rebounds in the NCAA tourney.

Bench Players:

F Cleanthony Early JR: He is their best weapon off the bench. An all-league performer and all-name team pick, Early was a JUCO gem for a Shockers team that lost its top five scorers from the 2011-12 season. He brings instant offense off the bench and is a good rebounder. He has scored 57 points and 28 rebounds in the NCAA tourney.

G Ron Baker FR: He is a red shirt freshman that gives this team a good three point shooter off the bench and will be brought in to hit clutch shots. He has scored 44 points and hit 6 three point shots in the NCAA tourney.

G Fred VanVleet FR: Was a four-star recruit and the No. 83 player and No. 15 point guard in the class of 2012. He impressed the WSU coaches with his maturity and plays an important role off the bench. He has scored 33 points in the NCAA tourney.

G Nick Wiggins JR: He is the older brother of the nation’s top high school senior, Andrew Wiggins. Junior swingman, is an excellent shooter with great range. He can give WSU off the bench.

You don’t make it to the Final Four without being a really good team. Wichita State is a very good team. They have won 4 games in the tourney primarily from getting extra possessions from their offensive rebounding and steals. They have also had some good 3 point shooting. They will have a tougher time getting the extra possessions against our Cards. Our guys have done a great job of taking care of the ball and they won’t be forced into a frantic style of play. They will welcome it and do it much better than the shockers. The Cards have also done a very good job of guarding the perimeter in the last 4 games so the Shockers won’t see any easy ones.

I also think Louisville can exploit some questionable ball-handling in a way no one has done to the Shockers yet this tourney. Wichita State actually turns it over on 19.6 percent of possessions, and Louisville’s press has the Cardinals ranked second in the country in steal percentage 16.1. The Cards also go to the offensive glass hard, grabbing rebounds on 38.3 percent of its missed shots 15th in the nation. So the Shockers won’t have their usual advantage on the boards.

They have some quality players but Russ, Peyton, Gorgui, Chane, Wayne, Luke, Montrezl and Stephan are on a different level in my opinion. This Cardinal team has their eyes on the prize and it is going to take more than a very good Wichita State team to send them home. I think they will hang with us for a little bit just playing off the emotions of the moment but the Cards will prevail.

The Beak Prediction:
Louisville 80 Wichita State 65
