Some major college basketball teams claim to be everyone’s Superbowl when they go on the road. With President Bush, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, NFL Stars, and NBA stars in a packed house at Moody Stadium tonight and it being the hottest ticket in town I think this game would classify. The announcers while naming the list of celebrities in the building said this game was like the Oscars. The Cardinals overcame one of wildest crowds and raucous environments you’ll ever see in a college basketball game tonight and beat SMU 84-71. Pitino “this was a very difficult environment…obviously they serve alcohol here.” SMU had been a perfect 15-0 at home and had a +19.6 margin of victory at home until the Cardinals came to town tonight in what was considered their biggest game in school history. With this win Louisville (25-5, 14-3), is now leading the AAC conference by a half-game, and will host No.19 UConn on Saturday (3/8) at 2pm ET on CBS.

The Cardinals used some great defense, some great three point shooting and some solid free-throw shooting to overcome a hard charge and a 14 point lead by the Mustangs in the first half. The Cardinals had 17 steals tonight, scored 25 points off of 23 turnovers, hit 54% (13-24) from 3-point range and 70% (19-27) from the free-throw line.

I said in my post game article that Russ and Luke would have to step up tonight. While sick to his stomach for most of the game Russ had 26 points, 9-15 FG, 6-6 from 3-point, 6 rebounds, 5 assist, 2 steals, and 3 turnovers. Maybe one of his most courageous and gutsy performances of his career. Pitino on Russ being sick “(He said) put me in when you can..just let me throw up.” Pitino: “If you put a harness on Russ, you are not going to see greatness.” Well tonight we saw greatness from a great kid.
Cool hand Luke had 15 points, 3-10 FGs, 3-8 from 3-point, 3 rebounds, 4 assist, 1 steal, and 3 turnovers. Pitino:
“I told Luke to go over to (George W. Bush) and just say, ‘It’s an honor that you’re here tonight. We’re so happy to see you.'” I still don’t think his game is where it was a year ago around this time, but he is showing signs that it is going in that direction. If his game is on it puts this team at a different level.

I also said in my post game that Montrezl would have to continue doing his thing and that it was time for Chris Jones to step up and have a big game. Montrezl had 19 points 7-9 FGs, 8 rebounds, 3 assist, 3 steals, and 2 turnovers in another beastly performance. After his abuse of the rims at Moody Stadium tonight he now has 80 dunks on the season. He is playing with the type of domination that a team could ride to a Final Four.
And Chris Jones did step up tonight and then some. He had 21 points, 6-14 FG, 4-7 from 3-point, 2 rebounds, 6 steals, and 2 turnovers. We found out after the game that he’s dedicating the rest of the season to his brother, Demetrius Ray, 24, who was shot and killed in Memphis Saturday. Jones on death of his brother:
“I’m doing what he wanted me to do. He wanted us to win the whole thing, so I’m dedicating the season to him.” It’s unreal what some of these kids have to overcome on a daily basis. CardNation is behind you Chris.

This was a fun one tonight Cardinal fans. The great Paul Rodgers called it the “greatest road win ever” and he’s seen a lot of em. If our guys can build on this one and keep it going it won’t be our last trip to Dallas this season. I think you will start to see the same sentiment from a lot of the college basketball talking heads after this one. I know that I couldn’t be more excited. Only thing bad about tonight was knowing that in the next game we have to say good-bye to some of the most awesome kids to ever lace em up in the Cardinal Red. Saturday will be bittersweet…

The Beak Basketball Breakdown: The Mustangs Part 2

Our Cardinals will be looking to get back on track and looking to get a quality win before heading into the post season when they face #18 SMU on Wednesday night. SMU and Louisville are meeting for the 10th time, and the second time this season. The Cards beat SMU back in January 71-63. Louisville leads the series 7-2. Wednesday’s game is the second collegiate match-up for Hall of Famers Larry Brown and Rick Pitino. The two met 17 times in the NBA (Brown 11-6). SMU is coming into this game (23-6, 12-4 American) and are ranked in both polls for the second-straight week. The Mustangs are 15-0 at home, including a 9-0 mark in newly renovated Moody Coliseum. The Cardinals (24-5, 13-3 American) come into this game after a tough loss this past weekend in Memphis.

Southern Methodist may not Jump out to everyone as a respectable opponent or national contender, but boy are they ever. Larry Brown is a helluva coach and he has assembled a roster that can compete with any team in the American and the country. The Mustangs are second in the nation in field-goal percentage defense (1st American), holding opponents to 36.9%. The Mustang defense is allowing just 61.2 points per game, 17th in the NCAA (2nd American). SMU has held 28 of its last 38 (22 of 29 this year) opponents under 40% shooting. SMU has outrebounded 22 of 29 opponents this season.
On offense, SMU is leading the conference in field-goal percentage, shooting 49.2% (9th NCAA). The Mustangs are also shooting 36.9% from beyond the arc, second in the conference. SMU is third in the league in assists per game at 15.2 (42nd NCAA), and is averaging 72.1 points per game. Additionally, the Mustangs have outscored 25 of 29 opponents in the paint by an average of 34.5-21.2.

They return four starters from last season, Nick Russell (9.2 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 3.3 apg), Ryan Manuel (5.3 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 0.8 apg), Cannen Cunningham (5.0 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 0.7 apg), and Shawn Williams (4.9 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 0.7 apg). They have three transfers giving them great production with leading scorers Nic Moore (14.1 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 4.7 apg), Markus Kennedy (11.9 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 1.6 apg), and Yanick Moreira (7.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 0.4 apg). SMU also signed one of the best shooting guards in the country in McDonald’s All-American Keith Frazier (5.5 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 1.0 apg).

This team has seven players averaging at least 5.3 points. Nic Moore and Markus Kennedy are averaging double figures. Individually, Nick Moore is 12th in scoring (14.1), 12th in FG% (47.6), 3rd in assists (4.7), 5th in FT% (84.1), 2nd in 3PT FG% (45.1), 5th in 3PT made (2.1), 7th in assist/turnover ratio (2.0) and 9th in minutes played (32.0) He has made the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll eight times this season.
Markus Kennedy is 6th in FG% (54.0), 5th in blocked shots (1.4), 5th in rebounding (7.0) 4th in defensive rebounds (5.2), and has been named American Athletic Conference Honor Roll four times.
This is one of those teams that can come out of nowhere in the NCAA tournament and be the surprise of the college basketball season winning it all. They are deep, talented and versatile and they have great leadership in their Hall of Fame head coach.

This will be the third hostile road environment that our Cards have face in the last four games and this just may be the most hostile of them all. Tonight’s game is the hottest ticket in Dallas and the Mustangs and their fans are hungry for a win against our Cardinals. SMU and Louisville have both improved since the last time these teams played. They have other players that are stepping up and we got guys like Montrezl and Rozier who are now big contributors. It will take the best effort of the year from the Cards to go into Dallas tonight and get a win. Luke and Russ will need to show some leadership, VanTreese and Mango will have to get some production in that 5 spot and Wayne Bkackshear will have to show some sign of life. Chris Jones is also due for a big game especially after the egg he layed in Memphis.

This one is gonna be rough, rowdy and really intense. It’s gut check time for the Cardinals and we’ll see if they are ready to put that Memphis debacle behind them and enter the post season swinging. I do think our Cards pull out a very close game tonight, but be ready to hang on the edge of your seats. Go Cards!

Cards Fall Short On Memorable Night

The Women came out swinging last night but #1 UCONN proved to be the better team this time around beating the Cardinals 68-48. A Louisville program-record crowd of 22,163 had the KFC Yum center rocking as the Cardinals exploded out to a 7-0 lead which was the largest deficit this season for the Huskies. It looked like that there might be some magic on senior night, but trailing 22-21 with 11:57 left in the first half, the Huskies scored 11 straight points as part of a 22-7 run. Louisville went scoreless for 5:05. The score would be 43-31 UCONN leading at the half.

Louisville would have another scoreless stretch of 9:33 in the second half. The ladies just couldn’t get anything going their way missing 31 of their last 44 shots of the game and the Huskies weren’t giving anything up on their end and were playing great basketball. They out-rebounded the Cardinals 47-30 and had a season high 19 offense rebounds that lead to 15 second chance points. Tia Gibbs had 16 points (6-of-10 FG) to lead Louisville (28-3, 16-2) in the loss.

Even though it was a losing effort the night still had its special moments as the Louisville fans honored seniors Tia Gibbs, Shoni Schimmel, Antonita Slaughter and Asia Taylor. It was also Native American Appreciation Night, to honor some of Louisville’s most dedicated fans. Native Americans, with 40 states including Alaska were represented in the Yum Center last night. Many were there to support Shoni Schimmel, and sister Jude, a Cardinals guard, both of whom are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla in Oregon. It was hard to grasp the magnitude of the evening for college sports and the Native community. Glad I got to be a part of it.

Native American Halftime:

This group of seniors and women’s basketball team have provided many great moments over the last four years. They became America’s Sweethearts last year after pulling off the biggest upset in the history of the women’s tournament beating Baylor and making that magical run to the Final Four. During the post game last night Shoni Schimmel vowed that before the season was over that they would beat this UCONN team. I don’t think any of us doubt that could happen and I think these ladies still got some magic moments left.

After the game thousands of fans stood in line for hours to get player autographs. Just another testament of how much love and passion Cardinal Nation has for it’s women’s basketball program. It is really special. And the ladies stayed until the last person was through.

Today Louisville signed 7 footer Anas Mahmoud as the 6th member of the 2014 Class. He had offers from Arizona State, Auburn, Cincinnati, Dayton, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Minnesota, N.C. State and Texas A&M. Others expressing interest include DePaul, Florida, Georgia and Miami. He became the latest of Egypt’s rising stars to seek a college basketball career in the USA. A few months ago the 18-year-old who last played for Cairo based Zamalek Club arrived in Orlando, Florida. Mahmoud has helped his native Egypt finish second at the tournament held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, and qualify for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.

He has been described as a legit 7 footer and a skilled player. He can face the basket and shoot, handles the ball well and has a good overall feel for the game. He is lacking in strength and is still adjusting to hoops on the states. The Cardinals 2014 class is loaded with good size and great potential. Future looks bright!

Cards Leave Memphis Singing The Blues

Tough loss today Cardinal fans and this one has a lot of us singing the blues. It’s ok to feel frustrated and ok to vent those frustrations. Only a true fan lets a loss ruin their whole day and just maybe the whole weekend. With the 77-62 win Memphis sweeps our beloved Cards this season, but we still got the overall lead 53-36. If that helps you any. Louisville could have taken the lead in the AAC today with the win, but they are now tied with Cincy for 1st with a 13-3 conference record and are now 24-5 overall.

The Cards were scrappy today and did hold their own against a very good team in a hostile environment. They played a decent defensive game, out rebounded them but they just didn’t execute down the stretch. The problem for our Cardinals in this game today wasn’t what happened between the lines as much as it was what happened between the ears. This group has got to learn how to be more mentally tough at the end of big games. Coach Pitino was really disappointed in the way his Team acted down the stretch saying: “I knew we were in trouble when we went up seven and our guys acted like a junior high kids (celebrating),” “We weren’t focused to put the team away.”

Montrezl Harrell scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. He was unstoppable yet never touched the ball in the final four minutes. Russ Smith scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half and fouled out in the final minute. He was a one man show in the first half and without his effort Louisville wouldn’t have come close to Memphis. Luke Hancock had 11. Luke has got to get that shot going in. Gonna be hard to make a run if he doesn’t. Both Russ and Luke have to step up at the end of games and be leaders.

It’s on to the next.., and our guys are going to have to shake this loss off fast and not let it snowball. Another big game and another hostile crowd awaits on Wednesday at #23 SMU. It’s bye-bye to the beards, but hopefully we can still make a run at Dallas. The Cards just have to get tougher at the end of tough games and on the free-throw line. The talent and effort are there.

The Beak Basketball Breakdown: The Tigers Part 2

Uploaded from the Photobucket

iPhone App

photo BasketballBreakdownmnmn_zps960dbb01.jpg

The Cards will be in Memphis on Saturday to play the second game in a conference rivalry that historically is considered to be one of the better hardwood feuds in NCAA basketball. The series began in 1948-49, but heated up when the two programs became league rivals in 1967-68 as members of the Missouri Valley Conference. The two schools have played each other as members of the Missouri Valley Conference (1968-73), Metro Conference (1976-91), Conference USA (1996-2005), and now the AAC. The Cardinals and Tigers will do battle for the 89th time on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals lead this series 53-35, but it was the Tigers who came into the Yum Center earlier in the season and got the win 73-67. The Tigers are looking to bounce back Saturday after suffering a 77-68 setback at Houston Feb. 27 and having won seven of their last 10 games. The Cards come into this after a blowout win against Temple have won 7 games straight. Our Cardinals are a perfect 7-0 in road games in American Athletic Conference play.

The Tigers could pose a big threat to Louisville winning the AAC title regular season title. If the last meeting was any indication, this one should be fun to watch. Josh Pastner has his best team in his five seasons as head coach. Their deep, veteran backcourt is among the best in the AAC, and the country. Memphis returns a perimeter game that can compete with any team in the country with Joe Jackson (14.4pts, 3.6rpg, 4.7apg), Geron Johnson (9pts, 5.1rpg, 3.8apg), and Chris Crawford (8.8pts, 4.0rpg, 3.0apg). Crawford and Jackson are the first teammates to have 1,000 points and 400 assists for a career. While emerging low-post force Shaq Goodwin (12.6pts, 6.5rpg, 1.6apg) and freshman sensation Austin Nichols (8.7pts, 4.1rpg, 0.4apg) are controlling both the defensive paint and the boards. Since playing them last time Michael Dixon Jr. has also emerged as a offensive threat with (11.8pts, 2.3rpg, 2.5apg).

Memphis has a solid group of athletes and they pose a threat at every position on the floor. Saturday’s game features a battle between top-30 ranked teams in terms of the nation’s top scoring offenses. In the latest NCAA rankings released Feb. 24, Memphis is No. 26 in the nation in scoring offense and Louisville is No. 12. The Tigers are second in the American Athletic Conference with a 78.8 scoring average. Our Cardinals lead The American with an 82.3 scoring average.

Memphis comes into Saturdays game averaging 78.8 points-per-game, while shooting 48.6% from the floor and 33.1% from 3-point range. The Tigers are converting 65.4% of its attempts from the free-throw line. Defensively, Memphis is allowing 70 points-per-game as the opposition is shooting 43% from the floor. The Tigers are out-rebounding their opponents 1066-980 with a rebounding margin of +3.1 averaging 38.1 boards-per-contest.

Here we are again Cardinal fans another Saturday, and another big road game in a hostile environment against a very old rival. This one will be a stiff test for our Cardinals and they will have to be much more effective in every aspect of the game than they were last weekend against Cincy. Where their offense was created by just one guy this Memphis team has playmakers all over the court and a few on the bench. Russ leads four Cardinals averaging double figures in the scoring column at 17.7 ppg (third in The American). Montrezl (13.3 ppg), Luke (11.7 ppg) and Chris Jones (10.1 ppg) also average double digits for Louisville. We will need these guys to show up and then some today. I think the X-factor for us could be the much improved play of Mango and VanTreese since the last match-up, and Terry Rozier. Wayne could also come out of no where and be the difference maker.

I’m confident but also very nervous about this one. It will truly tell us where our Cardinals are in terms of their threat to make a deep run in the next few weeks. This game is going to test them at every facet of the game, including their poise as that crowd is going to be down right nasty. I really want this one Cardinal Fans. Stroke those beards and cheer hard. Go Cards!

A Perfect Cardinal February

The Cardinals keep rolling right along tonight completing their 7th undefeated February in the last 100 years as they easily take care of business against Temple beating the owls 88-66. The Cardinals (24-4, 13-2) have now won seven straight and will be heading to #21 Memphis on Saturday.

This team is starting to look like a typical Rick Pitino team this time of year. Louisville fans have always enjoyed the month of February and March knowing they are going to see their team play the best basketball of the season. Our guys are playing with a purpose right now and are having fun in the process. Pitino on his team: “I think they like each other. I think they have a good time. We’ve been blessed with great chemistry for 3 years.” They are exciting from a fundamental standpoint as well. They had 9 turnovers tonight and this is the seventh game straight that they’ve had single digit turnovers. They have 14 single digit turnover games this season. Pitino: “This is not a selfish team in any characteristic. It’s what we believe in.” Tonight the Cards had 17 assist on 32 made baskets. Pitino: “It seems like we’re a better offensive team this year than last, and I’m not sure why that is.” The Cards shot 53% from the field and 40% from three tonight. They had great ball movement and it gave them some good looks.

The Cards had three guys in double figures tonight. And these guys were 25 of 34 from the field and nearly outscored Temple all by themselves. Russ lead the way with 24 points, 3 assist and 4 steals. He moved to eighth on Louisville’s all-time scoring list tonight, and also passed Darrell Griffith in career steals tonight for 2nd place all-time. He is stepping up and leading this team at the right time.
Montrezl continues his great play and had 21 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. He has provided a big lift to this team with his aggressive play, but will need to improve on his performance at the free-throw line. He was just 3-7 tonight.
Terry Rozier has been getting better and better and continues to look like one of the best freshman in the country. Tonight he was 8-10 from the field and scored a career high 19 points. This was his fourth straight game scoring in double-digits, averaging 14.8 points per game the past four games. He has a 5:1 assist to turnover ratio, and has played over 530 minutes this season and only committed 15 turnovers.
Chris Jones is another player that deserves a mention. It’s great to see him finally settling into his role in this team. It had to be a hard transition from being the star of the show at the Juco level to just another good player on a team full of them. He had 9 points and 8 assist tonight. Pitino on Rozier and Jones:
“They both have tremendous upsides and they were both outstanding tonight.”

It’s all coming together Cardinal fans. Momentum is building and it’s looking more, and more like this team is going to make a decent run at this thing again. The team has taken a huge step forward in the last few weeks, but it’s what they do in the next 3 games that will say a lot about just how far they can go. I know it’s been a lot of fun and I’m excited for the post season. My beard is itchy but it’s all worth it. No Shave Till Dallas! Go Cards!

The Beak Basketball Breakdown: The Owls Part Two

Uploaded from the Photobucket

iPhone App

photo TempleOwls_zpse6685a17.jpg

Our surging Louisville Cardinals return to action tomorrow night to face the Temple Owls for the second time this season. The game will be shown on ESPN 2 at 9PM. The Cardinals played the Owls a few weeks ago on Feb 14th after the game had been postponed due to a winter storm. Louisville won that game 82-58. These teams don’t really have a long history and have only met six times overall with Temple holding the advantage 4-2. Temple (7-19, 2-12) is coming off a narrow overtime loss at #22/24 Memphis on Feb. 22, while the Cardinals (23-4, 12-2) come into the game having won six straight.

Temple has a history of being a good program and their fans are used to 20+ win seasons and good basketball. Those days seem like a like a long time ago and a team that was once thought to contend for the AAC title has struggled most of the season to get wins against anyone in the conference. But they have started to show some signs of life in the last couple of weeks beating #23 SMU and taking #22 Memphis to Overtime in their last game. Temple is one of only six teams in Division I to have four players averaging 13 or more points per game, and the Owls’ top four scorers, who have accounted for 83 percent of the team’s points, produced just 26 percent of last year’s total points. Their offense has started to be more consistent, but they are still struggling to find the consistency they once had with their feard match-up zone defense.

The Owls are lead by Dalton Pepper (17.2ppg, 5.1rpg, 2.3apg), Will Cummings (16.3ppg, 3.2rpg, 4.3apg), Quenton DeCosey (15.2ppg, 3.7rpg, 2.3apg), and Anthony Lee (13.8ppg, 8.8rpg, 0.8apg).
Pepper is 4th in the AAC in scoring, 2nd in the AAC in three pointers made and 10th in the AAC in three point percentage. Cummins is 5th in the league in scoring. DeCosey is 9th in the AAC in scoring and has had double figure scoring in 20 of 22 games. Lee leads the conference in rebounding, and has 10 double-doubles on the season. These guys are getting it done but not getting much help from the rest of the team.

Temple comes into Thursdays game averaging 73.2 points-per-game, while shooting 42.6% from the floor and 34.5% from 3-point range. The Owls are converting 69.8% of their attempts from the free-throw line. Defensively, Temple is allowing 77.2 points-per-game as the opposition is shooting 47.1% from the floor. The Owls are getting out-rebounding by their opponents 989-927 with a rebounding margin of -2.4 averaging 35.7 boards-per-contest.

Our Cardinals are on a roll and the first game against Temple is when things really started to come together for this team. The Cards also have four players who average in double figures in scoring, led by Russ with 17.5 ppg (3rd in AAC) and Montrezl with 13.0 ppg to go with a team-best 8.2 rpg (3rd in AAC). Terry Rozier is also a player that is starting to emerge as a solid contributor in many ways. And other guys are filling their roles nicely.
The Owls are running into a buzz saw on Thursday night, and it won’t be too much fun for them. The Cardinals will use this one as a tune-up for the big game coming up on Saturday at Memphis. No Shave Till Dallas. Go Cards!

Russ Smith hit a clutch shot this past weekend to beat arch rival UC at the buzzer. It’s one of those moments that Louisville fans will remember forever. He has also been racking up the mid-season honors; in just the last few weeks being named one of 30 mid-season finalist for the Naismith Player of the Year Award, and was added to the finalist list for the Senior CLASS Award. Russ has also moved himself into the top 10 in the Louisville record books in several categories including #10 in Scoring, #2 in steals, #10 in FG attempts, and #4 in made free-throws. This season he is averaging 17.5 points a game, 4.5 assist a game, and 1.9 steals a game to lead the team.

Russ had a dream season last year for our Cards and was arguably the best player in the country. He averaged 18.7 points per game while shooting 41.4% from the field, 2.9 assist per game, 3.3 rebounds per game and 2.1 steals per game. His regular season success carried over into the post season scoring 134 points in the NCAA tournament to help lead the Cards to a National Title. He now has 196 career points in the NCAA Tournament, 5th most in Louisville’s history. As coach Pitino said in his post game comments after the USF game. Russ has two Big East titles, back-to-back Final Fours, and a National Title. What other senior in the country can say that?

This coming from a player who didn’t play in 10 of the Cardinals’ final 13 games as a freshman and a former 2 star recruit coming out of high school. Things got so bad for Russ during his freshman year that he was thinking about leaving the Louisville campus until former Cardinal Rakeem Buckles talked him into giving it a second chance. Russ took his good friends advice and decided to make the best of his opportunity. And make the best of it he has. His name will now be etched forever in Cardinal lore. It’s not very often that you get to see a player like this come from virtually nowhere to become a superstar, but that’s what has happened during Smiths four years of college basketball and it has been great to witness such an extraordinary rise.

If it weren’t for a Louisville roster depleted by injuries two seasons ago, Rick Pitino might have never been forced to figure out a way to best utilize the available pieces he did have. One of those pieces was Russ Smith, and the way Rick figured out how to utilize Russ’s skills and off set his weaknesses was nothing short of coaching genius. Russ also deserves a lot of credit for the hard work and dedication he has put in over the last three years to reach that max potential. Hopefully he will add the title of Back-Back-to-back NCAA Champion and All-American to his resume in April. Regardless of what the outcome of this season will be the fact still remains that Russ went from 2 stars to superstar a meteoric rise to fame that we may never see again. As the basketball season winds down over the next couple of weeks enjoy watching and cheering for this kid who has poured his heart and his soul into the team, the University of Louisville, and the city of Louisville.

It was the end of the regular season rivalry between Louisville and Cincinnati. And the 99th meeting between these teams would not disappoint. Joining the football team the Cardinals basketball team took the final game on Cincys home turf beating the Bearcats in an instant classic 58-57. The regular season series ends with the Cardinals leading 56-43 spanning the Metro Conference, Missouri Valley , Conference USA, Big East and AAC. Cards now move into first place in the AAC at 12-2 and 23-4 on the season.

When we look back on this season it is that 9 day lay-off that was the turning point. Before that break the Cardinals were struggling to find their defensive identity, players weren’t certain of their roles and they were struggling to find any consistency. Since that break they are 4-0, players have settled into their roles on the team, they have moved back into the top 10 of offensive and defensive efficiency ratings, and have been playing with a sense of purpose. A team that we were wondering if they could win a few games in March now looks like a group that could defend their title.

I said from day one when Terry Rozier committed to play for the Cardinals that he was going to be something special. I’ve followed this kid on his journey to Louisville and he has lived up to every expectation I had. He was the difference maker today and without him on the court Louisville wouldn’t have won this game. This kid is one of; if not the premiere freshman in college basketball. He leads the Louisville offense like he’s played for four years. After today it is very clear that he is our best option for point guard going forward. He played 22 minutes today shot over 60%, had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal, two assist(including game winning) and didn’t have any turnovers. In 536 minutes played this season he only has 15 turnovers. Unreal for a freshman. I get giddy when I think about this kid as a sophomore.

Montrezl Harrell is also a kid that has grown up before our eyes. He has also become one of the premiere big men in college basketball. Today he had his 7th double-double of the season leading the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds. We better enjoy these next few weeks with him because he will be headed to the NBA next season.

And you can’t say enough about the production Mango and VanTreese have provided in that 5 spot. Coach Pitino said that in order for this team to have a shot that it would have to be these guys who stepped up their games. They have answered his call and have had 35 rebounds and 33 points in the last four games. Drastic improvement from these guys especially Mango who is really starting to play more aggressive.

Last but certainly not least is the player that I’ve had more enjoyment following and watching than any other in my lifetime Russ Smith. I am a firm believer in Karma and today our Hero got some good as he was able to hit the game winning shot. This guy has given his heart and his soul to the University of Louisville and in a era of the one and done has proven that it can still happen the old fashion way. He epitomizes the Louisville First brand and he deserved that moment today more than anyone. I am really gonna hurt when we have to tell him good-bye in a few weeks but it’s been a helluva ride. He finished today with 10 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assist, and 3 steals.

Man what a game! A fitting end to what has been an incredible series. Our grandfathers, fathers and now we have got to watch the Cardinals and Bearcats do battle. I hope that this rivalry can continue in the future so my son can also watch these teams go at it. College sports are all about rivalries and this is one of the best.

The beards keep growing and it’s on to the next as the Cardinals look to run the table and possibly still claim that number one seed. This was a great win today folks. Enjoy the rest of this day and wear that Cardinal gear with pride. No Shave Till Dallas!
